MASTER OF MUSIC IN CONDUCTING

Choral Music
Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in music or music education (or the equivalent), including keyboard skills and proficiency in either voice, piano, or organ equivalent to the completion of the third year of undergraduate instruction at USC.


Musc 707 - Music Bibliography and Research 2 Credits

Major Area:

a. Music 711 Y - Applied Choral Conducting 6-9 Credits
b. Area Studies - Credits from choral literature, choral arranging, score reading, and vocal pedagogy 6-9 Credits
c. Recital (1 credit of MUSC 796)


16 Total Credits
Music History (as determined by the Music Diagnostic Exam) 6 Credits
Music Theory (at least one 700-level course and one analytical course) 6 Credits
Music Electives (may include ensemble credits) 2 credits
TOTAL 32 Credits

Ensemble requirement: Minimum of two semesters in an appropriate choral ensemble (MUSC 734).

Foreign-language and diction-proficiency requirements (to be satisfied before enrollment in recital credit): 1) reading proficiency in French, German, or Italian, or the completion of two years of college-level study in one of these languages; 2) diction proficiency in Church Latin and in any one of French, German, or Italian.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in music or music education (or the equivalent), including keyboard skills and proficiency in either a keyboard or orchestral instrument (for orchestral conducting) or a wind or percussion instrument (for winds conducting) equivalent to the completion of the third year of undergraduate instruction at USC

Musc 707 Music Bibliography and Research 2 Credits
Major Area:

a. Music 711 Y - Applied instrumental conducting (6-9 Credits)
b. Area Studies - Credits from orchestral or band literature, score reading, instrumental arranging, string or wind pedagogy (6-9 Credits)
c. MUSC 796 Recital (1 Credit of MUSC 796)

16 Total Credits
Music History (as determined by the Music Diagnostic Exam) 6 Credits
Music Theory (at least one 700-level course and one analytical course) 6 Credits
