DMA IN CONDUCTING


CHORAL MUSIC

Prerequisite: Master of Music degree in choral conducting
or the equivalent

Doctoral studies 48 credits
Major Area (26 credits)


Area Studies (Including at least 6 credits of applied conducting and studies in choral literature, choral methods, score reading, etc.) 14 credits

Dissertation Requirement:

Recital Preparation (6 credits)
4 Recitals (4 credits)
Document (2 credits)

12 credits

Advanced Research (MUSC 747)

2 credits

Cognate Studies in Music History, Music Theory etc.

20 credits

Total

48 credits


Diction-proficiency (to be satisfied before admission to doctoral candidacy):
proficiency in two foreign languages (French, German, Italian) not passed
during the admission process.

Foreign-language requirement (to be satisfied before the Comprehensive
Examination can be scheduled): reading knowledge of French, German,
or Italian (the chosen language must differ from the one used to
satisfy the foreign-language requirement for the master’s degree in
choral conducting).

Ensemble requirement: Minimum of two semesters in an appropriate choral
ensemble (MUSC 734)

 

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Prerequisite: Master of Music degree in orchestral or
winds conducting or the equivalent

Doctoral studies 48 credits
Major Area (26 credits)


Area Studies (Including 6 Credits of applied conducting and studies in orchestral or band literature, score reading, etc). 14 credits

Dissertation Requirement:

Recital Preparation (6 credits)
4 Recitals (4 credits)
Document (2 credits)

12 credits

Advanced Research (MUSC 747)

2 credits

Cognate Studies in Music History, Music Theory, etc.

(minimum two 700 level courses)

20 credits

Foreign-language requirement (to be satisfied before the Comprehensive
Examination can be scheduled): reading proficiency in French,
German, or Italian (for orchestral conducting majors, the chosen
language must differ from the one used to satisfy the master’s
foreign-language requirement).

Ensemble requirement: Minimum of two semesters in an appropriate
instrumental ensemble (MUSC 734)
