CILEM FAQ

What is CILEM?

The Carolina Institute of Leadership and Engagement in Music (CILEM) provides students with the specialized skills and diverse experiences they will need to forge successful and meaningful music careers. CILEM offers coursework, guest speakers and performers, workshops, internship opportunities, resources, and community outreach activities that are designed to broaden the experiences of music students and deepen their understanding of the larger musical world. Students learn to effectively communicate their art not only through performance, but also through audience interaction, community engagement, and entrepreneurship opportunities. These opportunities deepen their understanding of the leadership skills required to succeed as a professional musician in a new century.

How do you pronounce CILEM?

CILEM is pronounced ki-lem, (like Kyle + em).

What courses are being offered?

Currently, the following courses are available:

MUSC 580 Entrepreneurship in Music
This course teaches students the basic for- and non-profit skills required to succeed as a musical entrepreneur in addition to the arts’ cultural and economic environments.

MUSC 100A Music Advocacy I
An introduction to advocacy methods, techniques and experiences needed to understand the positive effects of music in American society.

MUSC 582 Introduction to the Music Economies
A survey of the for-profit and non-profit economies and the broader policy that drives these economies

MUSC 590 Seminar in Music Entrepreneurship
Analysis of music businesses through the use of case studies and development of a feasibility study to determine economic viability of a music business.

MUSC 591 Music Leadership Practicum
A practicum to design and execute an entrepreneurial, music leadership project in Columbia, South Carolina.

Can I major in music business?

The School of Music does not offer a music business major. However, the BA degree with a major in music is a good fit for students interested in music business. It allows ample opportunity to take courses in business while still majoring in music. The basic aspects of the popular music industry are covered in MUSC 580. The University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business is consistently ranked among the top business schools in the country.

What degree program do I have to be in to participate in CILEM courses and activities?

CILEM courses and activities are open to all students regardless of degree program.

Can I get internship experience through CILEM?

Yes. Students can gain valuable experience through internships with various arts organizations. Course credit can be earned through these internships.
