What an incredible weekend! We had 200 cellists from South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama on stage at the Koger Center – the largest number ever!
Anthony Elliott led the Large and Small Choirs in original cello choir pieces by Livingston Gearhart and Julius Klengel, as well as arrangements of works by Debussy, Mozart, Byrd, Tchaikovsky and Berlioz. We also premiered a new piece in 8 parts by USC composer John Fitz Rogers in honor of Mstislav Rostropovich, called “Ad Pacem”. A very moving work, this was commissioned by the SC Cello Choir for this event.
Saturday also featured a clinic on the Junior All-State piece, led by Richard Thomas (Presbyterian College) and one on the Senior All-State piece, led by Elizabeth Austin (Clemson University). Christine Lee (Bob Jones University) worked with the younger members of the Large Choir while the Small Choir rehearsed in another room. Kenneth Law (Converse College) was principal cellist for the Small Choir, and Christopher Hutton (Furman University) was principal in the Large Choir. Both played beautiful solos in Jericho by Livingston Gearhart.
On Friday, 22 cellists performed in 5 separate master classes. Anthony Elliott led three of the classes, working with the students on pieces by Chopin, Bach, Popper, Saint-Saens, Lalo and Elgar, among many others. Two other master classes were held by cellists Natalia Khoma (College of Charleston) and Javier Arias (Amernet Quartet).
Many thanks to the USC ASTA Student Chapter for their work in hosting this event. Stacy Wiley, the chapter president, organized all the various tasks of the chapter members, and contributed many hours of her own time (and she is not even a cellist!). Special thanks also to: Debbie Apple (for hours spent compiling all the registration data), Laura Cleverdon and Natalie Shaw (for all the xeroxing time), Courtney Jackson and Jill Jackson (for putting together the reception), and Matt Peebles (for his organizational skills). And, to Sarah Cleaton, Allison Gallimore, Aubrey Gray, Sarah Hettich, Taniesha Hines, Jenny James, Liz Jimenez, Monica Johnston, Taylor Jordan, Luis Mercado, Kristian Ring, Kevin Rogers, Kristin Southard, Julie Wilson for their time and energy (especially at 7:30 am on a Saturday morning!).
We also appreciated the support of Jim Clinton Violins (Taylors, SC) and Gengakki Violins (Atlanta, Ga), who came with instruments for the participants to try out.
The next South Carolina Cello Choir will take place in September, 2008 at Furman University in Greenville. Check back here for exact dates and registration information!
