2011 South Carolina Cello Choir and Workshop with Terry King
September 16-17, 2011

At Koger Center and USC Recital Hall

University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC

Sponsored by:

SC – ASTA and University of South Carolina\

One hundred and thirty five cellists came together on the stage of the Koger Center on Saturday, September 17th in Columbia. They rehearsed all day under the direction of Terry King and then performed 13 pieces to an appreciative audience. It was an enjoyable day of sight-reading and hard work.

This was the 32nd annual SC Cello Choir, composed of professionals, amateurs, teachers, students and "cello friends".

Saturday also featured a clinic on the Junior All-State piece, led by Brenda Leonard (Converse College) and one on the Senior All-State piece, led by Christine Lee (Bob Jones University). Andrea Kemper (James Island HS, Charleston) worked with the younger members of the Large Choir while the Small Choir rehearsed in another room. Ismail Akbar (Associate Principal, SC Philharmonic) was principal cellist for the Large Choir, and Christopher Hutton (Furman University) was principal of the Small Choir. Together they played a beautiful duet in an arrangement of "Amazing Grace".

The clinician for the weekend, Terry King, gave two interesting master classes on Friday afternoon and evening. He worked with students on the Dvorak concerto, Haydn C and D major concertos, Lalo Concerto, Bach Fifth Suite, Bruch's Kol Nidre, Crumb Solo Sonata and the Prokofiev Sonata. Much of the music played by the Choirs was also arranged by our clincian, Mr. King.

Many thanks to the USC student ASTA chapter for their help in hosting this event, and especially to chapter president, Joanne Mosquera, for her work in organizing everyone:

  • Diane Oliva and Clara Logue: for the beautiful reception on Friday. It was delicious, and everyone really appreciated their culinary efforts and creativity!

  • Lydia Burrage-Goodwin and Lauren Garber: for copying the music, and organizing it so well.

  • Sarah Land and William Laney: for making the posters that greeted people at the doors!

  • Rachel Myers: for handwriting all the name labels, and setting up the signs

  • Katie Lindler and Molly Sgrecci: for compiling and Xeroxing the programs on Saturday

  • Katie, Molly, Diane, Lauren and Clara: for taking all the registrations, and entering the information into the computer
  • And most of these people are not even cellists!

We also appreciated the support of Bernhardt Violins (Greenville, SC), Gengakki Violins (Atlanta, Ga), and William Harris Lee (Chicago, IL) who came with instruments and bows for the participants to try out.
Check back at the ASTA website or at https://www.music.sc.edu/cellochoir/ for information about next year's annual Cello Choir event.
