Message from the Dean, Dr. Tayloe Harding Welcome to the University of South Carolina School of Music! We are
delighted and proud that you, as an individual interested deeply in music,
have chosen to review our programs, activities, and people. The USC School
of Music is a place where we value music’s important role in human
life, and where we strive to pursue with excellence a leadership position
in fulfilling this role for all South Carolinians, Americans, and beyond.
Should you choose to become more involved with us, you too could become
a participant in this effort, whether you elect to join us as an undergraduate
or graduate student in one of our numerous nationally-accredited academic
degree programs or whether your interface with us would be as parent,
concert-goer, patron, and/or friend. As this website will reveal, our
School of Music has much to offer individuals in all of these categories.
A superiorly prepared, diverse, and inspiring music faculty here at South
Carolina creates, studies, performs, teaches, and advocates for music.
And, they do so in excellent facilities, in a vibrant, southern urban
location, and with the support of hundreds of outstanding alumni and
patrons throughout the country and across the globe. As a result, the
USC School of Music enjoys a national presence in the fine profession
of higher education in music and is poised to leverage this presence
into even greater action and leadership on behalf of music in our world.
The “culture of doing through and in music” represented in
the work and aspirations of our School of Music both resonates with the
greater University of South Carolina’s focus on economic, social,
cultural, and aesthetic research and development while at the same time
prepares new professional musicians with the skills and knowledge to
be successful in their careers and with championing music’s power
in all our lives.
It is an exciting time to be a participating member of the dynamic music
community at South Carolina. Join us and our mission in the USC School
of Music and contribute your energies and abilities to this dynamic excitement.
Most Sincerely,
Tayloe Harding
Dean, School of Music
