MUSIC PLAY classes at the University of South Carolina's CHILDREN'S MUSIC DEVELOPMENT CENTER  are part of an innovative program designed to develop the music potentials of young children.  Current research performed by Dr. Valerio, her colleagues, and her graduate assistants, is showing that music is best learned if informal music guidance is begun as early in life as possible.

Much like they learn language, young children, as early as birth, if not before, absorb the musical sounds in their environments. In each Music Play class children are guided by their teachers, parents/caregivers to develop music skills through fun, playful, socially interactive music activities that include singing, chanting, and moving. Older children are introduced to a variety of music instruments. The goal of the program is to help children increase their music aptitudes and develop initial music skills that prepare them for a lifetime of music enjoyment and appreciation.

Children may participate in USC's Music Play Program from birth through age 5. In Music Play, each child's readiness for achievement in later formal music instruction will be enhanced under the guidance of the CMDC faculty.  In the music play program, children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver during each class.

All classes will meet in room 108 of the School of Music, located at the corner of College and Assembly streets in Columbia, SC.  Metered street parking is available.
