Dr. Wendy Valerio, is Associate Professor of Music and Director of the Children's Music Development Center (CMDC) at The University of South Carolina where she teaches graduate and undergraduate music methods courses and conducts early childhood music development research. As CMDC director she supervises music education experiences for young children and USC students at the USC Music Play program, USC Child Development and Research Center, and St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary School in Columbia, SC. Valerio is an active clinician in the United States, as well as Lithuania, Germany, Canada, and Bermuda. Her research has been sponsored by The Texaco Foundation, The Presser Foundation, and the Unviersity of South Carolina. Scholarly articles based on her research have been published in Learning from Young Children: Research in Early Childhood Music (Rowman & Littlefield, 2011) Musical Experience in Our Lives: Things We Learn and Meanings We Make (Rowman & Littlefield, 2009), the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education (2009; 2007), and Listen to their voices: Research and Practice in Early Childhood Music, (Canadian Music Educators Association, 2007), The Development and Practical Application of Music Learning Theory (GIA, 2005), and in the proceedings of Gesellschaft für Musikforschung: Musik und kulturelle Identität, Bärenreiter). She is co-author of Music Play (GIA, 1998) and Jump Right In: The Music Curriculum, Rev. Kindergarten-Grade 5, and her work is featured in Music Play: Bah, Bah, Bebop, Beethoven (GIA). After teaching elementary general music in the public schools of Lawrence, KS, Valerio received MME and PhD degrees from Temple University. She holds Kodaly Level I and Orff-Schulwerk Level III certifications. She is a member of the International Society for Music Education, Music Educators National Conference, Society for Music Teacher Education, Alliance for Active Music Making, Gordon Institute for Music Learning (Faculty)), and the American Orff Schulwerk Association (Movement and Special Topics, Faculty).
