Guidelines for Class Participation
| Below are listed some
of the basic tenets of the music learning theory designed by Dr. Edwin
E. Gordon and implemented at USC's Children's Music Development Center
by Dr. Wendy Valerio. These tenets are provided so that you may continue
to be positive and active participants in the music education of your children. |
What
parents and caregivers should do:
| 1. Be the best musical model you can be
for your child. Participate in singing, chanting, and moving in class
and at home. |
| 2. Avoid moving your child's limbs for him or her. |
| 3. Encourage your child to babble tonally
and rhythmically, but NEVER force your child to make a music response in
class or at home. |
| 4. Encourage your child to move freely and
continuously, but NEVER force your child to move in class or at home. |
| 5.If your child hears a piano being played
at home, make sure the piano is tuned. |
| 6. Please remember that CMDC classes are not performance classes. Music classes at CMDC have been designed to allow each child to develop his/her musicianship in a natural and unpressured manner. |
Other Considerations for
Participation
| 1. No drinks or snacks will be allowed in
the classrooms. Please step outside the classroom, should your
child need a drink or snack. Then, rejoin the group. |
| 2. Strollers, diaper bags, and other personal
items should be stored in Room 108. |
| 3. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to
bring tape recorders to record class for personal use at home. Any
other use of taped recordings of class is strictly prohibited. |
