| The
structure of the classes you and your child(ren) attend at CMDC is
based
upon the tenets of music development found in Edwin Gordon's A Music
Learning Theory for Newborn and Young Children, G.I.A. Publications,
2003. That structure is non-traditional, yet is designed to develop
each child's potential for music achievement, that is, music aptitude,
in the most natural manner possible.
In order to develop their
music aptitudes, children need to be acculturated, or exposed, to the many
tonalities and meters of music as early as possible. Then, they need
to be encouraged to babble tonal patterns and rhythm patterns, and eventually
begin to imitate tonal patterns and rhythm patterns. Finally, after
they imitate tonal patterns and rhythm patterns with accuracy, they need
to be encouraged to coordinate their breathing and moving with their singing
and chanting. (That entire process should take from 3-7 years, and
it should not be rushed).
You will notice that at CMDC, much
of the process of each class will take place without the use of the English
language. That is done to heighten each child's awareness of the
unique qualities of music. You will also notice that though each
class is filled with singing, chanting, and moving, there will also be
periods of silence within each class. Those silences are intentional
and they are designed to allow each child time to begin to comprehend the
sounds he has been hearing.
