Master of Music Education

Prerequisites: Bachelor's degree in music education (or the equivalent), including teacher certification and (for applicants in elementary music, choral music/conducting, or orchestral music/conducting) keyboard skills

THESIS TRACK

Major Area 15 credits
a.) MUED 790 and MUED 795 (6 credits)
b.) Music Education electives (6 credits), including at least one course in the student's area of specialization
c.) Thesis (3 credits)
Music History (as determined by the Music Diagnostic Exam) 3 credits
Music Theory 3 credits
Music Electives (from outside music education; up to 6 credits may be taken in the College of Education) 11 credits

RECITAL TRACK

Major Area 12 credits
a.) MUED 790 and MUED 795 (6 credits)

Applied Music and Recital 5 credits

a.) Applied studies (two 2-credit semesters)

A minimum of two semesters in an appropriate ensemble (MUSC 734)
is required for choral and instrumental majors in all tracks.

MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING

Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in music or music education (or the equivalent).

This master's degree is designed for persons who are seeking initial teacher certification in music. Persons who have already earned initial teacher certificationshould consider the Master of Music in Music Education degree.


Three curriculum strands are offered to meet the teaching certification standards and educational needs of the students who will enroll in the M.A.T. (Music). Those three strands are (1) Vocal/Choral, (2) Instrumental – Strings, and (3) Instrumental – Winds/Percussion. Students may be required to fulfill undergraduate prerequisites appropriate for their areas of concentration.

EDFN 749--The School in Modern Society (3 credits)

EDRM 723--Classroom Assessment Methods (3 credits)

Music Theory (as determined by the Music Diagnostic Exam, 3 credits)

Music History (as determined by the Music Diagnostic Exam, 3 credits)

MUED 731--Teaching Internship (12 credits)

MUED 732--Teaching Internship Seminar (3 credits)

 

 

Following are the strand-specific courses required to meet the teacher certification standards and educational needs of students in each M.A.T. strand.

 

Vocal/Choral Strand 15 credits

MUED 565--Specialized Elementary Methods (2 credits)

MUED 756--Choral Development and Related Materials (3 credits)

MUED 554/7xx--Materials and methods (either choral or elementary, 3 credits)

MUSC 734--Choral ensemble (2 semesters of participation, 2 credits)

MUSC 577--Vocal Pedagogy (2 credits)

MUSC/MUED--Electives (select from: diction, choral literature, conducting, independent study, applied voice, applied piano, or ensemble; 3 credits)

 

Students must satisfy prerequisite skills in piano, conducting, and elementary and choral materials and methods.

Students must satisfy prerequisite skills in secondary string instruments, wind pedagogy, conducting, and piano.

 

Instrumental (Winds/Percussion) Strand 15 credits

MUED 568--Organization & Administration of Music Programs (2 credits)

MUED 568P--Practicum in Instrumental Music (1 credit)

MUED 557--Wind Pedagogy II (2 credits)

MUSC 734--Symphonic Band (2 semesters of participation, 2 credits)

Students will select two of the following three courses (6 credits):
