to most other undergraduate schools or conservatories of music. For

Master
of Music Degree in Choral Conducting
Prerequisites:
Bachelor's degree in Music or Music Education (or the equivalent),
including keyboard skills and proficiency in either voice, piano,
or organ equivalent to the completion of the third year of undergraduate
instruction at USC.
Requirements:
MUSC 707 Music Bibliography
and Research--2 credits
Major Area--16 credits
Applied conducting (6-9
credits of MUSC 711Y)
Area studies (at least 6-9 credits from choral literature, choral
arranging, score reading, vocal pedagogy)
Recital (1 credit of MUSC 796)
Music History--6 credits (one 700-level course required)
Music Theory--6 credits (at least one 700-level course and one analytical
course)
Music Electives--2 credits (may include ensemble credits)
Total credits required: 32
Doctoral
of Musical Arts Degree in Choral Conducting
Prerequisite:
Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting (or the equivalent)
*Prospective doctoral
students in choral conducting may have a master's degree in either
voice or choral music education, but applicants must demonstrate
the equivalent of the master's degree in choral conducting, including
proficiencies in the following: choral conducting, applied music
(equivalent to the completion of the junior year of voice, piano,
or organ instruction), diction (Church Latin and any one of French,
German, or Italian), keyboard skills, and foreign language (reading
proficiency in French, German, or Italian).
Requirements:
Major Area--26 credits
Area studies (14 credits, including at least 9 credits of applied
conducting, and studies in choral literature, choral methods, score
reading, etc.)
Dissertation requirement
(12 credits)
Recital preparation (6 credits of MUSC 891)
4 recitals (4 credits
from MUSC 892 and 896)
Document (2 credits of MUSC 897)
MUSC 747 Advanced Research (2 credits)
Cognate Studies (20 credits of approved studies in music history,
music theory, etc.)
Diction proficiency (to be satisfied before admission to doctoral
candidacy): proficiency in two foreign languages (French, German,
Italian) not passed during the admission process
Foreign language requirement (to be satisfied before the Comprehensive
Examination can be scheduled): reading knowledge of French, German,
or Italian (The chosen language must differ from the one used to
satisfy the foreign-language requirement for the master's degree
in choral conducting.)
Ensemble requirement: minimum of two semesters in an appropriate
choral ensemble (MUSC 734)
Total credits required: 48
