How much time is required of ensemble participation?
Major ensembles, Concert Choir and University Chorus meet 4.5 hours per week. Carolina Alive has three 50 minute rehearsals.
Graduate Vocal Ensemble which has undergraduate participants rehearses 2.5 hours per week and Madrigal Ensemble rehearses 2 hours per week.
The Concert Choir tours during the week end before Thanksgiving and sometimes during spring break. When we do foreign tours they occur during the break between semesters or during spring break.
Typical semester performance schedules for each ensemble are posted on the ensemble web site.
What is the cost of participating in an ensemble?
Students in University Chorus and Concert Choir are asked to provide their performance attire, a proscribed black dress for women and a tuxedo for men. Special group prices are available for this and used dresses are usually availablre. The University Chorus and Concert Choir dresses are the same so that students moving from University Chorus to Concert Choir do not have to buy a second outfit.
Touring
U.S. Tours require little or no cost from students beyond a few meals. Foreign tours, though partially subsidized by the university, require students to pay a portion of the cost. These tours are not mandatory but students are asked to make the commitment early. Donors sometimes help needy students with these expenses.
Do non-music majors sing in choral ensembles?
Yes! In fact even our most select ensembles are approximately 25% non-music majors. Overall about 35% of our participants are non-music majors.
May I purchase a CD of the Concert Choir?
