The Choral Department enrolls nearly 200 students in various ensembles. Students represent virtually every major on the campus. It serves the general university community by presenting both formal and informal concerts. The Concert Choir has toured internationally and throughout much of the U.S.
While the University provides the major portion of our financial support, ensembles are supported by concert hosts through performance fees and in-kind contributions of lodging and food. Support is always needed for undergraduate scholarships, graduate stipends, and annual budget, especially for international performance tours.
Various funds in the School of Music provide vocal scholarships for outstanding students. The Arpad Darazs Endowment Fund was created to honor the late Arpad Darazs for his service as choral director at USC. This fund provides support for virtually all activities of the Choral Department. It has been used primarily for graduate stipends and to reward outstanding undergraduates for their participation in the Graduate Vocal Ensemble.
The Elva Meggs/Chip Williams Carolina Alive Scholarship Fund was created to honor A.G. “Chip” Williams for his work as director of Carolina Alive, our vocal jazz ensemble and for his work as Choral Department accompanist. The fund provides a small scholarship to a music major for participation in Carolina Alive.
The Richard Conant Carolina Alive Endowment provides ongoing support for Carolina Alive and provides a small scholarship for a non-music major who participates in Carolina Alive.
There is also a Concert Choir Scholarship Fund and the Gloria Dale Cummins Endowed Fund for USC Concert Choir.
Gifts may be made to any of the endowments or to each ensemble through the USC Educational Foundation.
