Research Interets

A central theme that runs through both my teaching and research is a concern for the intertextuality and intermediality of music. My work on music in film stems from a general interest in music and visual culture and the marriage of music, text and image in a variety of 19th- and 20th-century genres—from magic lantern shows, tableau-vivant, opera and program music in the 19th century to silent and sound film genres in the 20th century. My recent research into contemporary auteur film soundtracks in particular considers the narrative implications of spacially fluid and stylistically eclectic soundtracks. I am also interested in how technology since 1960 has influenced the use of pre-existing music in film, how the development of the long-playing record, the music video and the transitions from analog to digital technologies in general haved shaped the style, speed and amount of music in film.
