MUSIC GRADUATE
DIAGNOSTIC EXAMINATION (MGDE)
IN
MUSIC HISTORY

All degree-seeking graduate students in music must take diagnostic examinations before initial enrollment. All students will take exams in Music History and Music Theory (MT-MGDE). Additionally, those majoring in piano performance or piano pedagogy will take an exam in piano literature, and those seeking a music education degree will take a test in that area. Piano pedagogy majors will also take an exam in piano pedagogy. All exams are offered immediately before the Fall, Spring, and Summer I terms. For specific dates and to register for the exams, please contact Ms. Traci Hair.

WHAT IS IT?
The MGDE in Music History is a three-hour exam that focuses on Western music from about 1400 until the present time. More specific information, including ample study suggestions, may be found at MH-MGDE.

RESULTS?
The results will be used to help determine what music history courses you will need to take during your work at South Carolina.

QUESTIONS?
Please contact Dr. Julie Hubbert, coordinator of Music History and Literature.
