    COURSE REQUIREMENTS

    IMPROVISATION I

    REQUIRED MATERIALS PROFICIENCIES TRANSCRIPTION ASSIGNMENT WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS
    • Spiral book of staff paper
    • Connecting Chords With Linear Harmony, Bert Ligon, Houston Publishing
    • Required listening from CDs available in USC School of Music library
    • All major scales (quarter note=160)
    • Outlines No.1-3 in major (from Connecting Chords With Linear Harmony)
    • 1-3-5-7, 1-3-5-7-9, and 3-5-7-9 arpeggios on all ii9, V9 and Imaj9 chords in major.
    • Selected technical studies (from handouts)
    Students will transcribe excerpts from the improvisations of historically significant jazz artists. Excerpts will be from two to four measures in length. Principles of melodic organization and exercises will be developed from the excerpts. Students will write the Outlines No.1-3 over the harmonic progressions to several assigned tunes.
    Keep jazz listening log. Some CDs in USC Library.
