  • Intro and review of improvisational materials.

  • Address, memorize and learn strategies for two tunes per week.

  • Transcribe and present to class three appropriate jazz transcriptions. Selections must be approved of ahead of time. Recording and legible transcription made available to instructor before making class presentation. Presentation includes:
    • Playing the jazz solo
    • Analysis including explaining melodic elements and significant structural elements
    • Developing pertinent exercises based on material in the transcription

  • Four playing exams plus final. Tunes must be played from memory. Exams may include specific technical exercises and etudes assigned in class and applied to specific pieces.

    FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Make a list of tunes you know well. Make a list of tunes you wish to learn and work on this semester.

    COURSE REQUIREMENTS

    IMPROVISATION III

    REQUIRED MATERIALS PROFICIENCIES TRANSCRIPTION ASSIGNMENT WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS
    • Spiral book of staff paper
    • Required listening from CDs available in USC School of Music library
    • Modes of Melodic Minor applied to specific chords, Symmetrical diminished scales, 5th and 3rd modes of major b6.
    • Arpeggios from Melodic Minor
    • Selected technical studies (from handouts)
    • Etudes as assigned

    Transcribe and present to class three appropriate jazz transcriptions. Selections must be approved of ahead of time. Recording and legible transcription made available to instructor before making class presentation. Presentation includes:
    • Playing the jazz solo
    • Analysis including explaining melodic elements and significant structural elements
    • Developing pertinent exercises based on material in the transcription
    Students will write technical exercises and improvisational approaches over harmonic progessions for studied pieces.

    Keep jazz listening log.

    GRADE DETERMINATION:

    • Playing Exams (4 @ 10% each) 40%
    • Improvisation workbook 10%
    • Transcription Assignment (3 @ 10% each) 30%
    • Final Exam 20%
    • FINAL GRADE 100%
    Improvisation workbook will include:
    • Log of exercises and approaches, handouts from class.
    • Bass lines, voicings for rhythm section
    • Transcription excerpts and complete transcriptions
    • Practice/exercise log
    • Listening log
