Intro and review of improvisational materials.
Address, memorize and learn strategies for two tunes per week.
Transcribe and present to class three appropriate jazz transcriptions. Selections must be approved of ahead of time. Recording and legible transcription made available to instructor before making class presentation. Mark reference timing on transcription. Presentation includes:
- Playing the jazz solo
- Analysis including explaining melodic elements and significant structural elements
- Developing pertinent exercises based on material in the transcription
Four playing exams plus final. Tunes must be played from memory. Exams may include specific technical exercises and etudes assigned in class and applied to specific pieces.

- Continuation of application of Modes and arpeggios of Melodic Minor, Symmetrical diminished scales, 5th and 3rd modes of major b6.
- Dealing with faster pieces and harmonic rhythms
- Selected technical studies (from handouts)
- Etudes as assigned
