Members and guests present: Bryson Borgstedt, Chris Bussell, John Duhan, Robert Gardiner, Dick Goodwin, Theresa Jenkins-Russ, Kevin Jones, Matt Olson, Roger Pemberton, Ronnie Ward, Travis Wharton, Mark Yost
Meeting called to order at 4:40 PM
Robert Gardiner, current State Unit President introduced the other current officers (VP and Pres-Elect Yost, Treasurer Borgstedt, Secretary Olson). He also updated the membership that we have $600 in the checking account from rebate checks and just under 50 current members. All paperwork has been filed in a timely fashion. Our funding has been used for the Newberry improvisation clinic and for jazz festival scholarships in the past.
The purpose of our meeting was to discuss ways for us to meet and exceed IAJE's minimum standards for state units. A result of our unit being more active is that we would be entitled to more funding for other events and projects. Bert Ligon, Past President, has begun an initiative to expand our state unit’s website. It is located at http://www.music.sc.edu/ea/Jazz/SCIAJE/sciaje.html.
We also plan to hold elections for new officers in the coming months, and Robert encouraged everyone to consider nominating people for these positions. He invited others to share their thoughts.
Bryson Borgstedt believes that the election process is the foremost item on our unit's agenda right now. He also briefed the membership on a recent executive board meeting, during which a number of brainstorming ideas were discussed, including a statewide clinic at the University of South Carolina, outreach opportunities (clinics, workshops, etc.), and the possibility of providing a reading band experience at future SCMEA conventions. The main mission, it seems, is to increase our unit's visibility and functionality.
Theresa Jenkins-Russ introduced herself to the group as a string teacher in the Spartanburg area and founder of the Carolina Cool Jazz Orchestra. She is especially interested in continuing to expand jazz offerings for string players. She also expressed a desire to provide more general jazz education offerings to the general public, to further education everyone about the importance of jazz.
John Duhan mentioned that we might benefit from immediately trying to increase student membership. He also expressed a desire to see a jazz education component in the typical undergraduate music education curriculum.
Borgstedt also reminded us to be on the lookout for an email regarding the election process, and also invited everyone to submit jazz news and educational materials to Bert Ligon for inclusion on the new and improved website.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 PM.
