Guitar Courses
USC Symphony Orchestra: Open to all University students by audition, the
Orchestra plays major literature from the symphonic repertoire. The ensemble rehearses
4 1/2 hours weekly and presents 6-8 concerts per year.
USC Chamber Orchestra: Open to University students by audition, the Chamber
Orchestra rehearses 3 hours weekly and performs 2-4 concerts per year.
Orchestral Literature: A study of the symphonies, concertos, tone poems, and
other symphonic works from the classic, romantic, and modern repertoire.
Applied Music: Violin, viola, cello, bass and classical guitar lessons are
available to all University students. School of Music instruments are available for
rental, as are lockers and practice rooms for applied music students and ensemble
members.
Chamber Music: Students can participate in trios, quartets and quintets which
are coached weekly by faculty, with monthly master classes led by USC faculty and guest
artists.
Survey of Chamber Music: This course emphasizes the history and literature of
small instrumental ensembles from the Baroque era to the present.
Recital Class: This weekly class, presented in the School of Music Recital Hall,
offers students the opportunity for public performace on a regular basis.

Methods for String Instruction: Fundamentals of playing and teaching orchestral
stringed instruments. Recruitment, curriculum content, and classroom management in
the context of public school string and orchestra classes.
String Literature and Practicum: A study of materials for developing the
technique and musicianship of string students in grades 5-12. Activities include
conducting appropriate literature in laboratory and school settings.
String Instrument Pedagogy: Principals and practices in teaching string
instruments, including Suzuki and Rolland. Emphasis on teaching in the private studio.
Instrumental Conducting: Required for music majors, this course is also
available to non-music majors with appropriate music background.
Advanced Performance Pedagogy: Available at the graduate level.
Guitar Pedagogy: Study of principals of playing and teaching the classic guitar
and procedures for their application to individuals in a variety of teaching settings.
Guitar Ensemble: Study and performance of music for guitar trio, quartet, and
larger ensembles.
Repertories of Lute, Vihuela, and Guitar: Study of repertoire for the guitar
and related instruments, from 1500 to present.
