Symphonic / Jazz / World Music Orchestra
USC’s newest orchestra is dedicated to performing music where the
boundaries between world music, jazz, and classical are blurred.
The music is rooted in modern jazz with a large-scale orchestral
setting and has very diverse ethnic influences, for example derived
from Latin, African, Middle Eastern, and other traditions.
Under the direction of Sonia Jacobsen, the orchestra’s unusual
instrumentation combines big band instruments with strings as well as
both ethnic and classic percussion.
Sonia Jacobsen, who additionally teaches world music, composition and
improvisation at USC, also runs the New York Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (http://www.symphonicjazz.org),
which is built around a similar concept.
The repertoire is the result of extensive research that she has
undertaken in this field over the years, gathering material through
collaborations with living composers from around the world, adaptations
of existing works, transcriptions of traditional folklore material and
more.
The orchestra’s inaugural concert will take place on Thursday April
10th 2008 at 7.30pm at the recital hall of the School of Music.
