USC Computer Music Concert

Under the direction of Dr. Reginald Bain since 1994, the USC Computer Music Concert is a showcase for computer music composition and research by USC students and faculty. Produced by the Experimental Music Studio (xMUSE), it features the creative products of active research programs in real-time interactive composition/performance and musical sonification. Come experience the thrill of watching humans and machines collaborate in real time to create the music of the future.

Homegrown
Tuesday, April 5, 2011
Program (pdf)

The Experimental Music Studio (xMUSE) at the University of South Carolina presents "Homegrown," an evening of electronic music. This year's concert features works by USC composers that are, at bottom, dialogues between performer and machine. Two new works by Columbia composer George Fetner anchor the concert: Black Lion for baritone saxophone and electronics, and Oceans of Oil for trombone and computer-generated sound. The program also includes music written for flute and electronics, for voice and digital-signal processing computer, and for Tenori-on (an electronic instrument designed at Yamaha's Center for Advanced Sound Technology). Please join composers David Batchelor, Gardner Beson, Jonathan Curry and Matthew Fink, as well as guest performers Serena Hill, Joanna Helms, Justin Isenhour and Matthew Younglove for what promises to be an electrifying musical evening!

Control Issues
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Program (pdf)

The Experimental Music Studio (xMUSE) at the University of South Carolina presents "Control Issues," a unique concert of live-interactive computer music. A showcase for composition and research by xMUSE students and faculty, this year's concert features the debut of the USC Laptop Ensemble, as well as seven world premieres ranging from xMUSE director Reginald Bain's "When Inspiration Came" for Wiimote and laptop, to Alex Wroten's "Crossfade" for laptop ensemble, a work that has emerged from his Magellan undergraduate research project. Other works include Nicholas Isganitis's edgy SC Honors College thesis composition "Word Clock/Time Management" for string quartet and electronics, and George Fetner's ethereal "Hypnagogia: Between Wakefulness and Sleep" for solo flute and electronics. Please join the members of the USC Laptop Ensemble, as well as guest artist Jennifer Parker-Harley for what promises to be an electrifying musical evening!

The Composer's Voice
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
Program (pdf)

Ranging from the prime-inspired music of xMUSE director Reginald Bain's "The Music of the Primes," for laptop, to George Fetner's "Cave of the Lighted House," for alto saxophone and electronic sound, and Alex Wroten's "Excuses," for two Guitar Hero controllers and interactive electronics, this concert celebrates the range and diversity of interactive computer music. This concert also features the world premiere of Alex Wroten's "Gold Nanorods," a computer-generated composition produced in collaboration with scientists from USC's NanoCenter. Commissioned as part of a National Science Foundation Participant Observer Fellowship, its musical materials were derived from the sonification (the mapping of data to sound) of gold nanoparticles. Other works include Daniel Pappas's "The Voice of Reason," and the computer-generated speech songs "Poesie" by Logan Young, and "4 Years" by Laura Nevitt. Please join guest artists Kevin Rogers and Matt Younglove for what promises to be an electrifying musical experience.
