USC School of Music
Composition Program

Reading Sessions

Established in 2000, annual reading opportunities provide our student composers with invaluable feedback on their work in a professional setting. The reading sessions are announced well in advance so that students may work with their private composition teacher to refine the work to the level required by professionals. Submissions are carefully screened by the composition faculty and must meet stringent score/part preparation guidelines.

Readings of Works for Large Forces

Students also have the opportuntity to hear their works for large forces read by USC ensembles. Orchestral readings are a regular part of our curriculum. End-of-semester reading sessions occur in MUSC 515 Orchestration and MUSC 717 Advanced Orchestration. The composition faculty has also helped students arrange for readings of new works for wind ensemble, concert band, chamber orchestra, and chorus as the need has arisen.
