USC School of Music
Composition Program

Music Technology

The Composition Program boasts music technology facilities that are among the finest in the region. Two large, sound-proof, dedicated studios house state-of-the-art audio hardware and software. Computer Music Studio B (R011) is a small music technology classroom and 5.1 production studio. The Experimental Music Studio (R039) is an advanced research laboratory for computer music composition and performance. Composers may explore a variety of specialized projects using a wide range of hardware and software. Students can study commercial applications of MIDI and audio technology, as well as algorithmic composition, programming, synthesis, signal processing, and real-time interactive composition/performance.

The School of Music also has a Music Technology Center (MTC), featuring 10 music workstations, a scanning station and instructor station serves as computer lab for all music students.

Recording Arts at USC
Under the supervision of the School’s recording engineer, Jeff Francis (formerly a senior recording engineer for Sony Records), students have the opportunity to study studio and field recording techniques, multi-track recording, advanced audio production techniques, and the like. All composers are encouraged to use some of their music technology electives to study recording.
