The
Composition Program boasts music technology facilities that are among
the finest in the region. Two large, sound-proof,
dedicated studios house state-of-the-art audio hardware and software.
Computer Music Studio B
(R011) is a small music technology classroom and 5.1 production studio.
The Experimental Music Studio
(R039) is an advanced research laboratory for computer music composition
and performance. Composers may explore a variety of specialized projects
using a wide range of hardware and software. Students can study commercial
applications of MIDI and audio technology, as well as algorithmic
composition, programming, synthesis, signal processing, and real-time
interactive composition/performance.
The School of Music also
has a Music Technology Center (MTC), featuring 10 music workstations,
a scanning station and instructor station serves as computer lab for
all music students.

Recording Arts at USC
Under
the supervision of the Schools recording engineer, Jeff Francis
(formerly a senior recording engineer for Sony Records), students
have the opportunity to study studio and field recording techniques,
multi-track recording, advanced audio production techniques, and the
like. All composers are encouraged to use some of their music technology
electives to study recording.
