Bachelor of Music Education

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Music Education degree will be prepared for careers in music education and are qualified for South Carolina teacher certification.The course of study for music education majors includes general education (English, mathematics, sciences) music theory/aural skills, music history and conducting. Music education majors study with applied faculty on their major instrument and have opportunities to perform in solo recitals and with a variety of ensembles.Professional education includes courses in the College of Education, courses in music learning and teaching and the opportunity to work in partnership with public school teachers.

Master of Music Education

Students who successfully complete the Master of Music in Music Education will further their knowledge and understanding through study of history, philosophy, learning theory, and pedagogical practice. Teacher certification is required for admission to this degree.
There are three possible tracks:

- Thesis track
- Recital track
- Nonthesis/nonrecital track (faculty encourage students who select this route to complete an independent capstone project)

Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education

Students who successfully complete the Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education will develop specialized knowledge and research skills. Persons who undertake this degree will have the following characteristics:

- A desire to teach at the collegiate level
- The capacity to complete independent research
- High level writing skills
- Highly developed self-discipline
