Susan Starr, Pianist

For the opening concert of the season, world-renowned pianist Susan Starr returns to the Koger stage for a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, op. 43. Included in the evening’s presentation by the orchestra are Glinka’s Russlan und Ludmilla Overture and Tchaikovsky’s most popular Symphony No. 5.

Andrés Díaz, Cello

Acclaimed cellist Andrés Díaz joins the USC Symphony Orchestra to perform Haydn’s exciting Cello Concerto in D major. Andrés Díaz has earned acclaim for his “strongly personal interpretive vision” (New York Times) and his “bold and imaginative” playing (Boston Globe). The orchestra will also perform Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture, and Mendelssohn’s beautiful Symphony No. 3 (Scottish).

This program highlights three of America’s most distinguished composers: John Adam’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and Aaron Copland’s ballet suite, Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes. Saxophonist Clifford Leaman will perform Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto, Op. 109. Critics have hailed Leaman “an artist of the first order … intuitive, exciting, and enthralling.” (Paul Wagner, The Saxophone Journal)

A Tribute to Haydn

In commemorating the Haydn year (2009), the USC Symphony will feature James Ackley in a performance of Haydn’s famous Trumpet Concerto. The concert will open with Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, bassoon, violin, cello, and orchestra. To conclude this evening’s celebration, the orchestra will present Berlioz’s monumental Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14.

Marina Lomazov, Piano

Columbia’s popular pianist and artistic director of the Southeastern Piano Festival Marina Lomazov joins the orchestra for a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 18. The orchestra will also present Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 and feature winners of the USC Concerto/Aria Competition.

Maestro Donald Portnoy And Friends

These distinguished artists, who have performed with Maestro Portnoy over the years, will perform a variety of tunes that are certain to provide a memorable musical evening. World famous violinist Vadim Gluzman will play Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capricioso, as well as Sarasate’s virtuoso Carmen Fantasy. Tenor Randy Locke, and mezzo-soprano Carol Sparrow will perform select arias and duets from the operatic repertoire, including the fiery finale from Bizet’s Carmen. The orchestra concludes its marvelous season with Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
