USC offers two degrees in music theory (B.M. & M.M.), as well as a wide array of interesting theory courses that serve the needs of our undergraduate and graduate degrees in music composition, conducting, education, history, and performance. USC students have the opportunity to profit from exciting and rigorous courses on topics such as Contemporary Experimental Music, Acoustics and Cognition, Music Since 1945, Music Theory Pedagogy, Philosophical Perspectives on Music, Post-Tonal Theory, The Music of Igor Stravinsky, Shenkerian Analysis, and Twentieth-Century Tonality, among others. Students also profit from frequent visits by guest scholars. Recent guests have included Guy Capuzzo, Tim Carter, Tomoko Deguchi, Daniel Harrison, Patrick McCreless, Philip Ruprecht, and Peter Silberman.
