A Computer-Assisted Approach to the
Study of Musical Acoustics

How I created these QuickTime Animations

I created the following annimations using Macromedia Flash. I then converted each example to a QuickTime movie for distribution over the Web.

InstructionsMacWintel
1.Create the musical example using a music notation program.Coda's Finale for MacCoda's Finale for Windows
2.Use a screen capture program to save the example as a image file.Toge's Flash-It, SW $15PrintScreen 95, SW $19.95
3.Use an bitmap image processing program to create each frame of the animation.Lemke's GraphicConverter, SW $35Graphic Workshop, SW $40

4.Put the frames in sequence using a program capable of exporting animations as a QuickTime movie. Set the frame-rate to something simple like one frame per second so you will be able to sync the audio with the visual when you generate the music. Export the animation in the QuickTime movie format.Macromedia's Flash for Mac
(FLA -> MOV) or QuickTime Pro
Macromedia's Flash for Windows
(FLA -> MOV) or QuickTime Pro
5.Create a corresponding audio or MIDI file to sync with the animation.

Click here for more information on how to add pitch bend commands to MIDI files.

Audio: Csound (AIFF)
MIDI: Vision for Mac (Export sequence as MID)
Audio: Csound (WAV)
MIDI: Vision for Windows (Export sequence as MID)
6.Open the MIDI or audio file using QuickTime. QuickTime will convert the file to its internal format (without images of course) and name it 'Untitled 1'. You do not need to save these files. Merge the animation and audio using MoviePlayer's by copying the audio file into memory and using QuickTime's Add Track feature to merge sound and image. Save as a self-contained QuickTime movie.Apple's MoviePlayer (MOV)Apple's MoviePlayer (MOV)
FW - Freeware; SW - Shareware, fee indicated
Others are commercial applications
