The process of using a magic square as the raw material for a composition is
explained in Cope, New Directions in Music, pp. 139-40.
Rules of engagement:
- You may usethe 5x5 magic square in the book (p. 140) or create your own 5x5 magic square.
- Pitch:Map the numbers in the square to pitches using any consistent method you wish (pc integers, scale degrees in any pitch collection, and so forth)
- Rhythm:Use changing meters and simple rhythms that will make it possible for us to sight-read your composition in class
- Timbre: The work's instrumentation should be extracted from the class ensemble
- Timbre: If you wish to map the numbers to other musical parameters, you are encouraged to do so
- Duration:ca. 45-60 sec.
Submission Guidelines:
Submit:
- Full score (that instrumentalists can read their part from)
- One page (typed) showing your magic square and a chart showing how you mapped it
to the musical elements pitch, rhythm, and timbre. One paragraph explaining
the structure of the work, that is, the process you used to map the table's structure
to the music's structure.
