Hear Just Intervals

Hear intervals found in the lower part of the harmonic series.

by REGINALD BAIN

Composer Harry Partch in his book Genesis of a Music assigned names to many of the intervals found in the lower part of the harmonic series. The chart below gives the interval frequency ratio, interval size in cents, Partch interval name and audio example for a number of these intervals. The chart is designed to help you learn what just intervals sound like. Note the pure quality of these intervals and how they differ from the intervals available on a modern piano.

Note regarding playback: It should be noted that each audio example uses the following tone pattern for playback:

A above middle-C sounds for two seconds, then the upper tone is added for four seconds. The audio examples were synthesed using Barry Vercoe's Csound and compressed using QuickTime's QDesign 2 Music codec. The timbre is a simulated pluck string based on the Karplus/Strong algorithm. Fade ins and fade outs have not been added to the examples.
