The text will be used as the basis for organizing material for the semester, and students will be expected to read and assimilate material therein. Class time will be given primarily to listening and analysis of numerous scores in the anthology, with emphasis on forms of the baroque, classic and romantic periods. Below is an outline of topics to be covered within a general time frame.


Week 1: Motive, Phrase, Period (Ch. 1)
Week 2: Small Forms (Ch. 2 & 3)
Week 3: Compound Ternary Form (Ch. 4)
Week 4: Rondo Form (Ch. 5)
Week 5: First Test
Week 6: Sonata Form I (Ch. 6)
Week 7: Sonata Form II
Week 8: Sonata-Rondo Form (Ch. 7)
Week 9: Concerto (Ch. 8)
Week 10: Second Test
Week 11: Variations (Ch. 10)
Week 12: Fugue and Related Genres (Ch. 12)
Week 13: Other Baroque Forms (Ch. 9 & 11)
Week 14: Conclusions (Ch. 13)


There will be several written assignments, from short analytical problems to analytical essays on complete movements. Tests may include questions on any
