UNDERGRADUATE ADVISEMENT PROCEDURES

Undergraduate advisement in the USC School of Music is handled by eighteen permanent faculty members aided by two administrative assistants in the Office of Music Studies (room 101K).  The faculty advisors specialize either in a particular degree program (i.e. BM- music education/choral) or serve students in a particular performance area (flute).

Prof. Robert Pruzin, Director of Undergraduate Studies provides the initial freshman advisement during Summer Orientation sessions.  Students are then assigned to a permanent advisor for subsequent advisements through the junior year.  Senior students in the BM-music education degree see Prof. Pruzin for their final advisements.

Dr. Rebecca Nagel handles the other senior BM and BA students.  The Application for Graduation form is processed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies and signed by the Associate Dean.

Approximately one week before the official advisement period begins, advisement information is distributed to students during a meeting of MUSC 100-Recital Class.  Students enrolled in MUED 200-Music Education Practicum receive information about the Praxis Exams, admission to the Professional Program in Education, and the directed student teaching experience through participation in that class.

Music faculty advisors post a schedule of available advisement times (typically 15-minute intervals) that spans the official advisement period and offers a variety of morning and afternoon appointment options.  If questions arise during the advisement session that cannot be answered by the faculty advisor, the Director of Undergraduate Studies is consulted.  Students who do not receive advisement during the official advisement period are generally referred to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

In addition to the information communicated to the student during the advising appointment, information about advisement, registration procedures, and degree requirements is available in USC School of Music Undergraduate Handbook and from the personnel in the Office of Music Studies.
