Reed equipment recommendations:
Keep in mind that equipment preferences such as reed knives, staples,
and cane are a personal decision; two oboists may choose different
equipment and both have equally good results.
Below I am listing some of my current favorites. Try them
out and see what you think!
Knives:
Nielsen wedge
knife Choose a small, medium, or large handle.
RDG French
razor knife
Sharpening equipment:
Keeping your knives very sharp is essential for making good reeds. There
are a number of ways to keep your knife sharp. This is what
I am primarily using now:
Sharpening steel “AH deep cut”, http://www.rogermillerrom4oboe.com/RogerMillerROMTOOLS.html
Ceramic stone: http://www.nielsen-woodwinds.com/p-5053-sharpening-stone-ceramic.aspx
Staples: There are a number of good choices
in staples. I like the Chudnow CA staples, available at http://www.mcwoboe.com/. Mark
Chudnow also makes the all-metal tubes, which have tremendous projection. I
have also had good results with Stevens and Nielsen staples.
Razor blades: You have to have some GEM razor
blades. They are also available through some woodwind
suppliers.
Cane:
I won’t make any cane recommendations, since personal preferences
vary widely and cane itself varies from year to year and batch
to batch. The best advice I can give with cane is to call
several dealers and ask them what they currently have that people
seem to like. Try out several different types and sources. If
you find something you like, order more immediately!
