Oboe Studio
Oboists at USC are an active, enthusiastic group.
Performing opportunities include the University Orchestra as well
as the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. The USC Opera program performs
two fully staged operas each year with orchestra. An active chamber
music program gives students the opportunity to explore this repertoire.
In addition to private lessons, oboists meet weekly for studio
class and reed class. Well known oboists come regularly for master
classes and concerts. Oboists at USC have had the opportunity
to play in master classes with Richard Killmer of the Eastman
School of Music, Nancy Ambrose King of the University of Michigan,
Mark Ostoich of the Cincinnati Conservatory and Linda Strommen
of Indiana University.
The School of Music includes excellent practice facilities, rehearsal
spaces for opera, chorus, and instrumental ensembles, chamber
music rooms, a recital hall, music library, and an outstanding
music technologies center. A reed workroom for the double reed
players includes an oboe gouging machine and a variety of shapers.
The School of Music owns three Loree english horns and an oboe
d'amore which are available to university oboists. Ms. Nagel is
the full time oboe professor and teaches all students studying
the oboe at USC. Students majoring in areas other than music are
welcome to participate in musical activities. The School of Music
has many students who participate in ensembles that are majoring
in other areas.
