Recital Editing

Recital / Concert Editing Instructions:

Edit the concert so that it sounds like a continuous performance from start to finish, as if the performer never left the stage, stopped to tune, cleaned spit valve, talked, etc. There should be no digital black (silence) anywhere within the program.

Be sure not to cut off any reverb tail or preparation noise (breath intake before first note).

  1. Fade from black 1 sec before first track.
  2. Place markers as you go along, approximately .5 seconds before the start of each piece/movement (don’t cut off prep sounds).
  3. Edit (if necessary) between each piece/movement so that there is no more than 8 seconds of room tone (dead time). There are 3 typical cases:
  • Performer stays on stage and there is no applause:
    • if there is more than 8 seconds of dead time between music, reduce time to 6 seconds.
    • if there is less than 8 seconds, leave as is
  • Performer stays on stage and there is applause:
    • if there is more than 8 seconds of dead time after the applause, reduce time to 6 seconds.
    • if there is less than 8 seconds, leave as is
  • Performer leaves stage
    • there will be two sets of applause - walk-off and walk-on:
    • cut from the end of the walk-off applause to 6 seconds before the beginning of the next music
    • if there is less than 6 seconds of dead time after the end of the walk-on applause, cut from the end of the walk-off applause to the end of the walk-on
  • Crossfade every edit with a Standard (Cosine) Equal-Power crossfade, no Dither
  • Since fades are not in music, they can be quite long (typically 3-5 seconds)
  1. At the end of the concert, cut at the end of the applause. Place a long (15-30 seconds) S-Curve Equal-Power crossfade, with no Dither.
  2. Check to see that the stereo is balanced. Use your ears and the meters. Applause is the best place to check, since it is wide, uniform source.
  3. Find the peak amplitude:
  • use the Gain AudioSuite Plug-In (Menu: AudioSuite - Other - Gain)
  • Select the entire concert (Command-A) and click find level
  1. Process. (this setup will allow you to add gain, High Pass Filter, and create a single consolidated file):
  • use the 7-band EQ3 AudioSuite Plug-In (Menu: AudioSuite - EQ - 7-Band EQ 3)
  • set the HPF to 18dB/oct and Freq of 30Hz
  • use the input and output gains to add gain (if you found the peak was -5.6dB, add 5dB of gain)
there are a few presets available
  • Select the entire concert (Command-A) and click process
  1. Rename
  • After the processing is completed and the waveform is drawn, rename the new file (double-click with hand tool)
  • Use standard naming convention (6 digit date MMDDYY and last name of performer, i.e. 122509 Kringle)
  1. Have edit approved.
  2. Separate Regions
  • starting from the beginning of the file and working to the end, separate regions at each marker (before each piece)
  • Use the memory locations window (Command-5 on keypad) and the Separate Regions shortcut (B)
  • It is ESSENTIAL that you separate regions from left to right only - if you forget one, use undo to go back.
  • Select the entire concert (Command-A) and Export Region Definitions (Command-Shift-Y)
  1. Move Files
  • Close Session
  • Select the session folder and hit enter to edit the name.
  • Copy the name into the clipboard (Command-C).
  • Add the word ‘ Edit” to the end of the name (122509 Kringle edit)
  • Create a new folder (Command-Shift-N) on AudioHD1
  • Paste the name from the Clipboard (122509 Kringle)
  • Move Edited audio files (.L and .R) from the Audio Files folder in the Edit folder to the new folder
  1. Create .disc File (Burn setup)
  • Quit ProTools
  • Open Jam
  • In the blank document, add object (Command-+)
  • Navigate to the proper folder and select the Left channel of Edited audiofile
  • In the Add Sound Items dialog box, select all the regions, but not the full file - which is the first item.
  • Click the first region, then Shift-click the last region. Click OK.
  • Double-click the seconds of the Pause Field of the first track. Enter 02.
  • Save. (Command-S)
  • Navigate to the proper folder and name the file with the standard name and a ‘.disc’ extension. (122509 Kringle.disc)From Alex Gilson:
