MUSC 567: ProTools/DA-88 Sync Setup

Time Base

The DA-88 is the time base (speed) master. Speed information must be sent to both the Digtial TimePiece and ProTools and they must lock to it.

Address Base

The DA-88 is also address base (location) master. The Digital TimePiece reads SMPTE TC patched from the DA-88 and converts this to MIDI Time Code (MTC) for ProTools.

Setup the Digital TimePiece via the Clockworks application:

Open the Sync/MMC window:

Set the Time Base/Address Base mode: LTC/WC

Set the frame rate: 30 fps

Set the Word Clock (sample rate): 44.1kHz

Patch DTP 256x WC out to Protools 256x WC In

Open your ProTools session.

Setup ProTools to sync to SuperClock and chase MTC

Go to Hardware Setup under the Setups menu:

Set Ch 1-2 Input to Analog

Sync Mode to Internal (to Slave to 256x WC)

Make sure the red SLAVE light is lit on the 888 I/O

Go to Peripherals under the Setups menu.

Click the Synchronization button.

Make sure the synchronization device is a Generic MTC reader from the Digital Timepiece port.

Go to the Session Setup Window under the Windows Menu.

Set the session frame rate: 30

Tell ProTools where to store your audio files.

Go to Disk Allocation under the Setups menu:

Set each track to ProTools 2

Put ProTools ONLINE

For ProTools to CHASE incomming MTC, you must put ProTools Online.

Click the Online button on the transport panel or select Online from the Operations menu.

DA-88 Setup

There are 4 menus. Press Group to access menus 2 and 4. Hold down shift and press group to access menus 1 and 3. Press Menu to move thru the menus. Use the "-" and "+" keys to change the data.

Group 1 Menu

Format: use only if you know what you're doing

**Input select: analog or digital

Output timing: analog or digital

Key Mode: all or individual

Key operation: DA-88 enable or DA-88 disable

x-fade time: 10 - 90 ms

**Frame Display: On or Off

Group 3 Menu

TC Generator Start Time

TC Generator Reset

**Time Mode: ABS or LTC

**Playback T/C: ABS or LTC

**Reference T/C: 24, 25, 29.97DF, 29.97NDF, 30

Fs Shift: Off or On

Error Bypass: 10 or 30 Frames
