Recording in 006/016

Connecting microphones

In 006 or 016, Open the black cabinet built into the wall. The Mic Inputs are at the bottom.

In 019, the microphone outputs (the other end of the what you just plugged into) show up on Row A for 016 (Instrumental Rehearsal) and Row C for 006 (Choral Rehearsal). Patch from the mic output to the console microphone input (Row B or D). On the Tascam channel, make sure the Mic/line switch is set to Mic. This is the switch below the meter bridge. If it is a condenser mic, turn on Phantom Power after all mics are connected. Remember there is one switch for each four mic inputs.

Use the Mic preamp Gain knob to adjust the gain of the microphone. This is the knob at the very top of the channel, right below the meter bridge. Make sure to get a large signal on the recorder, but don't go over 0dBFS on its meters.

When you turn Phantom Power on or off, or when you are connecting or disconnecting mics, make sure the volume is TURNED DOWN!

Talkback

Switch to the Monitor page on the console display. Make sure the Studio Monitor source is not Control Room or anything else with open mics. This will keep you from feeding your monitor signal into the classroom (which would cause feedback!). Set the Studio Monitor level to a nominal level (-16dB) using POD 3.

To speak to the people in Room 006 or 016, you first need to switch the classroom speakers over to Control Room. This switch is in the black cabinet where you plugged in the mics. Then, just press and hold To Studio Talkback switch. This is located to the extreme right of the console. Make sure the T/B Miclevel is up.

Important: Be sure to switch the classroom speakers back to classroom when you are finished. This switch is in the black cabinet where you plugged in the mics.

DO NOT power down the FSR SP-ES power sequencer in 006 or 206.

Connecting microphones

Connect the microphones to the panels on stage. Mic 1-10 is stage right (near the stage door), Mic 11-20 is beside the organ, and Mic 21-30 is stage left. These stage panels feed a mic splitter which splits the mics to the 206 booth and to 019.

Remember that you will need to provide phantom power from the Crest console in the recital hall booth. The console power supply is in the rack ahead of you as you enter the room. Turn on the Furman power conditioner to power this rack.

The channels match the stage panel numbers. For example, if you plug a mic into channel 11, turn on phantom power on Crest channel 11, and the mic signal will appear in 019 as Recital Mic #11.

Talkback

If you want to talk to the performers on stage via the Studio Talkback (remember to leave the studio monitor volume down to prevent feedback), you will need to patch the Studio output to an AUX amp in 206 and connect a speaker.
  • In 019, patch Studio L Out to Rectial Tie 16 (Y1 - J24)
  • In 206 booth, patch Studio C Tie 16 to Aux Amp C (D22 - H5)
  • Aux Amp C feeds FX Monitor #3
  • Get a speaker and cable from the booth, and attach it to FX Monitor #3, which is on the panel to the left of the organ. Push the connector in and give it a slight turn clockwise until it locks.

Important: Be sure to power down the Crest Console and return the speaker to the booth when you are finished.

DO NOT power down the FSR SP-ES power sequencer in 206.
